Media Diplomas: Studying Space Invaders?

9 08 2007

The London Standard recently carried an interesting piece on newly created Media Diplomas. Predictably, they’re being sensationalised as Space Invaders marginalising other subjects, which isn’t really the case: They cover all fields of media. There is some better criticism in the article, worth noting:

Alan Smithers, a professor of education at Buckingham University, warned: “The purpose of the diplomas is deeply confused.

“The concept is academic learning through applied knowledge but it means diplomas are neither one thing nor the other.

“They have been dreamed up by bureaucrats and are not sufficiently demand-led by employers.”

However, regardless of whether or not they are a “junk” qualification, the inclusion of games at all represents a positive step towards mainstream acceptance.
