AMPP Strike Deal With Linden Lab

2 05 2007

Update: No press releases from either party confirm a deal between the two; it appears to be misreporting of deals made with users of Second Life rather than Linden Lab. Our thanks to Tateru Nino.

As part of a much bigger network offering media buys across various digital platforms, AMPP Media are working with Linden Lab Second Life landowners to deliver ads in Second Life. Clikz mentions it:

Some of the media offerings blur the line between online and out-of-home. AMPP completed a deal with Second Life publisher Linden Labs and is ironing out the logistics to sell ads in Second Life, where digital ads will appear as outdoor placements in the virtual world.

This appears to be misreported. AMPP appear to be setting up to run ads in Second Life, but have not done any deals with Linden Lab (nor do they need to) – they have, however, apparently done some deals with users for advertising spots, by all accounts.

Thanks for flagging this up. Do you have any links or reasoning on that?

I’ve been unable to confirm either way. Most news stories quote Clickz, with some comments expressing hope that it’s misreported. It seems no press releases from Linden or AMPP talk about it; the source of the Clickz story isn’t clear.

The question about it was put to Linden Lab’s PR liaison during a press event that I was attending. Quite aside from the fact that it would be unnecessary to go through Linden Lab for something that they do not control – advertising deals are done with virtual landowners.

If you want your ads to be placed somewhere, your deals have to be done with the people who determine how that space is used, and that isn’t Linden Lab in this case.

Thank you, I’ve updated the post accordingly.
